Figurative Language in RFK's Speech


Ladies and Gentlemen,
I'm only going to talk to you just for a minute or so this evening, because I have some -- some very sad news for all of you -- Could you lower those signs, please? -- I have some very sad news for all of you, and, I think, sad news for all of our fellow citizens, and people who love peace all over the world; and that is that Martin Luther King was shot and was killed tonight in Memphis, Tennessee.
Martin Luther King dedicated his life to love and to justice between fellow human beings. He died in the cause of that effort. In this difficult day, in this difficult time for the United States, it's perhaps well to ask what kind of a nation we are and what direction we want to move in. For those of you who are black -- considering the evidence evidently is that there were white people who were responsible -- you can be filled with bitterness, and with hatred, and a desire for revenge.
We can move in that direction as a country, in greater polarization -- black people amongst blacks, and white amongst whites, filled with hatred toward one another. Or we can make an effort, as Martin Luther King did, to understand, and to comprehend, and replace that violence, that stain of bloodshed that has spread across our land, with an effort to understand, compassion, and love.
For those of you who are black and are tempted to fill with -- be filled with hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act, against all white people, I would only say that I can also feel in my own heart the same kind of feeling. I had a member of my family killed, but he was killed by a white man.
But we have to make an effort in the United States. We have to make an effort to understand, to get beyond, or go beyond these rather difficult times.
My favorite poem, my -- my favorite poet was Aeschylus. And he once wrote:
Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget
falls drop by drop upon the heart,
until, in our own despair,
against our will,
comes wisdom
through the awful grace of God.
What we need in the United States is not division; what we need in the United States is not hatred; what we need in the United States is not violence and lawlessness, but is love, and wisdom, and compassion toward one another, and a feeling of justice toward those who still suffer within our country, whether they be white or whether they be black.
So I ask you tonight to return home, to say a prayer for the family of Martin Luther King -- yeah, it's true -- but more importantly to say a prayer for our own country, which all of us love -- a prayer for understanding and that compassion of which I spoke.
We can do well in this country. We will have difficult times. We've had difficult times in the past, but we -- and we will have difficult times in the future. It is not the end of violence; it is not the end of lawlessness; and it's not the end of disorder.
But the vast majority of white people and the vast majority of black people in this country want to live together, want to improve the quality of our life, and want justice for all human beings that abide in our land.
And let's dedicate ourselves to what the Greeks wrote so many years ago: to tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of this world. Let us dedicate ourselves to that, and say a prayer for our country and for our people.

Response Journal


Response Journal for Act 1, scene 1 to Act 2, scene 2.

1. I feel like this story will become a tragic one and I also think that there's no good characters in this story.
2.  a. I really feel like Hamlet is the character from the anime that I watch name Zetsuen no Tempest (Civilization of Blaster) in which his name is Fuwa Mahiro. In my opinion, I think this two characters are very similar because they seek the revenge over their deceased beloved person. For Hamlet is his father but for Mahiro is his sister which he believed she was killed by someone and trying to find that murder. Both of them abandoned their reasoning and morals just for the sake of revenge.

     b.  The other anime I feel similar to Hamlet is Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (The Moment the Cicadas Cry). This anime is also as tragic as Hamlet. I feel the similar to both story because this anime also include the ghost and cursing that make people frustrated and trying to kill each other.

     c. This one I feel like many of you know because it is also done by Shakespeare and was adopted to be an anime, it is Romeo and Juliet. I believe many of you know this story already because it is also a tragic love story in which I feel like it is no second to Hamlet.

3. "The time is out of joint: O cursed spite, That ever I was born to set it right!"
    I feel like this quote really make me want to read more. In the way I interpret, it seems like Hamlet is telling that he was born to set this corrupted nation right. I also think that this quote is trying to tell that Hamlet will be the one who at last makes things alright again by anyway possible but I feels like it won't be the happy ending one for him.

4. I feel like I still don't really understand why Laetres and Polonius try to pursue Ophelia to stay far away and not to be near Hamlet.

Spectator Sport: Bitec Bangna


I woke up in the early morning; my face was really slimy and wanted to sleep more. My hasty mother keeps on speeding me up until I finished. At least I went on an old car and my fascinating father started it then quickly drove it to send me at the nice EIS. I thought that today I will enjoy myself to the best because we’re going to an interesting field trip! And that was the beginning of my 981 words story about this field trip.
When I first arrived at this nice school, EIS, I saw mellow people started to be happy and exciting about this incoming high school field trip. But not for so long that my creepy friend (not going to mention his unknown name) walks to me and with his eagle eyes told me that he saw many beautiful people whose clothes are transparent. I was creped out and tried as hard as possible to ignore his tempting speech. After having a five days per week flag line up, we EIS high school students waited for the big bus to arrive. Not so long when the big bus arrived, we quickly went on that big bus and were chilling on it until we reach our destination. From my point of view, I saw really flamboyant buildings which is really huge when I’m on the big bus and I thought that we could go in there right away after we came down from the bus. I also think like wow this will be the place where we could see many beautiful and wonderful things. But suddenly, after I went down from the bus, my mood was suddenly switched by the hot weather outside the huge building which really affected me. Then the strict security guards told me and other wonderful people from EIS to wait outside in the cool shelter. At that time we were in the state of confusion because we couldn’t find our main homeroom teachers. Not so long the state of the confusion disappeared and we started to get the grip of ourselves and finally able to went in that huge building.

When I went in, my skinny body was satiated and refreshed by the cool air which made me feel a lot better compared to the effect of the hot place outside. At the first glance in the large exhibition hall inside the huge building, I could barely see the exhibitions because there were so many unknown people walking by. I and my cool friends were waiting for the dense crowd to go somewhere else by talking about some funny topics but we later realized that it doesn’t work at all. I also saw many EIS teachers waiting with us. At last, we decided to just charge in that dense crowd and observe the exhibitions for Mr. Amazing Felix work. But my cool friends first decided to do Mr. Chemistry (not going to mention his marvelous name also but I think most of you might know his name) work first and tried to call their last member of the group. First I thought that it wouldn’t take so long to make that final member to arrive to where we are. But things went so ironic that it took my friends half an hour to just meet up with their final member to just take photos for Mr. Chemistry work. After finishing the easy but long work of Mr. Chemistry, I and my friends went around to look for the exhibitions that we could write down for Mr. Amazing Felix work. Then again things went ironic that we couldn’t find any place to write on so we decided to write on each other rough back until we found the place to write properly. Along the way, we found an nauseous exhibition called ‘space ball’, when I saw people went in that roundly space ball and were spin round and round and round in which I wonder that after they came off from that nauseous thing, why don’t they vomit out, I feel like those people who went in that nauseous space ball have a really tough sense of dizziness.  After watching that amazing thing, we finally found a place to write on and finished Mr. Amazing Felix work in an instant. Now that our objectives are complete, we went for the mellow lax on the exhibition hall, I and my friends scattered to go and look for something else interesting. After I had walked around the whole exhibition hall, I just realized that this place were so crowded that I couldn’t notice anything interesting and catching to me. So bored of these uninterested exhibitions, I quickly find my friends proceeded to our field trip groups.

On the mid afternoon, we went to find some cheap place with yummy food to eat. But it seems impossible in this huge building for us to find this kind of wonderful place so we went down to the bottom underground floor and ate at the tidy food court. I was so kind of shock that the food in here were very expensive and so plain, I kind of think that the food that were sold around the cloudy streets were a lot more delicious and cheap than the food we ate here. After eating this plain lunch, we walked around the crowded underground area until 12:30 p.m. if my sense of remembering was correct, Ms. Dependable Esther came to us and told us that the big buses were arriving and we should be going out by now. We then quickly and went to reunite with our EIS group and went inside our assigned big buses. When we were checking the preceding attendance, there were two lost people missing from our big bus so we try any possible ways to contact them. My concerned friends that seat beside me tried to call for them but it doesn’t work out. When the big bus nearly around 1:00 p.m., they just suddenly appeared on our big bus and every concerned people felt relieved. I felt like we could at last say good bye to this place and went back to our dear EIS.
When I arrived at the dear EIS, I promised myself that I wouldn’t go to that boorish Bitec Bangna again as much as possible unless it would be my last and final resting place. Also, thank you people who read my long and detailed Spectator Sport story until the end.
